Abstract

This study examines the implementation of open innovation in strengthening the competitiveness of Batik Putri Sanggabuana Karawang, which faces challenges including a shortage of skilled artisans, weak regeneration, and unstable production. The study aims to identify collaborative practices, learning processes, and value creation strategies generated through open innovation. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that open innovation expands learning opportunities, facilitates knowledge transfer, and fosters a collaborative ecosystem involving batik managers, government, academic institutions, schools, and local communities. Nevertheless, the limited availability of competent artisans remains a major obstacle to production sustainability and product competitiveness. Analysis using the Strategy Canvas and ERRC Framework indicates that developing an edu-production hub, strengthening the visual identity of Karawang batik, and establishing a structured community of young artisans are effective strategies for creating new market opportunities beyond saturated competition. The study concludes that cross-sector collaboration and a sustainable production ecosystem are essential for ensuring that open innovation generates long-term economic value, strengthens competitive advantage, and supports the sustainable development of local batik MSMEs.
