Carbon trading in Indonesia has become one of the important market-based approaches to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the transition toward sustainable development. This study is conducted to examine the contribution of carbon trading in lowering carbon emissions and to explore the main barriers faced in its implementation process. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method through a literature review of various relevant sources, including scientific articles, government policies, and documents related to carbon markets and climate mitigation strategies. The results show that carbon trading plays a significant role in encouraging emission reduction by stimulating the use of low-emission technologies, improving energy-saving practices, and supporting carbon offset programs across different economic sectors. Furthermore, the existence of carbon markets provides financial motivation for industries to participate in emission reduction efforts, which aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to achieving its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets and the Net Zero Emission agenda. Nevertheless, the implementation of carbon trading still faces several obstacles, such as relatively low carbon pricing, inadequate supporting infrastructure, limited effectiveness of regulatory enforcement, and insufficient awareness and understanding among industrial stakeholders regarding carbon market mechanisms. These challenges reduce the overall effectiveness of the system. Therefore, strengthening policy frameworks, improving transparency and governance in carbon trading systems, and increasing technical as well as financial support are essential steps to enhance the performance and sustainability of carbon trading implementation in Indonesia.
