Abstract

Waste management issues at the village level remain a significant challenge due to low environmental literacy, particularly regarding public understanding of organic and inorganic waste decomposition time. This community service activity aimed to improve awareness and understanding among residents of Dolok Jior Village, Sigumpar District, Toba Regency, through a visual educational medium in the form of a decomposition time information board. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a participatory action model involving the community in planning, designing, and installing the educational board. Initial observations revealed limited knowledge regarding differences in waste decomposition duration and the absence of household waste segregation practices. The implementation of a permanent visual information board increased community attention, understanding, and critical discussion regarding the long-term environmental impacts of plastic waste. The participatory approach strengthened community ownership of the program. Therefore, permanent visual educational media based on scientific information can serve as an effective strategy to promote responsible and sustainable waste management behavior at the village level.
