Abstract

The rapid growth of digital marketing has transformed the way brands communicate with consumers, particularly through online reviews, influencer endorsements, and interactive social media campaigns. While these practices provide opportunities for brands to establish engagement and trust, they also raise concerns regarding authenticity, transparency, and potential manipulation. This study aims to examine how consumers perceive digital marketing practices and how they distinguish between authentic communication and persuasive strategies perceived as manipulative. Employing a qualitative research approach through thematic content analysis, this study analyzes consumer discussions, digital interactions, and existing scholarly perspectives related to online reviews, influencer marketing, and digital advertising practices. The findings reveal that consumer perceptions of authenticity are primarily influenced by transparency, credibility, consistency between brand messages and actual experiences, and perceived honesty of influencers. Conversely, excessive promotional content, undisclosed sponsorships, fabricated reviews, and emotional manipulation strategies contribute to negative perceptions and reduced consumer trust. The study proposes that authenticity has become a critical strategic asset in digital marketing, where consumers increasingly evaluate not only the product value but also the credibility and ethical dimensions of marketing communication. This research contributes to digital marketing literature by highlighting the psychological mechanisms underlying consumer trust formation and provides practical implications for brands seeking to develop sustainable consumer relationships in the digital era.
