Abstract

This literature review article aims to analyze and synthesize scientific literature on the utilization of coastal natural environments as a learning medium for Social Studies (IPS) at the junior high school (SMP) level. The fundamental problem of IPS education dominated by textual, transmissive approaches with low contextualization serves as the background (Sumaatmadja, 2002; Banks & McGee Banks, 2010). Through a systematic review of foundational and recent works in learning theory, outdoor learning, place-based education, and environment-based social studies, this article argues that coastal environments hold extraordinary pedagogical potential as a living curriculum integrating geographic, economic, sociological, and cultural dimensions authentically (Sobel, 2004; Gruenewald & Smith, 2008). The AMARE conceptual framework (Authentic, Multidimensional, Active, Reflective, Empowering) is proposed as an implementation guide. The review concludes that integrating coastal environments into IPS learning when designed systematically based on experiential learning principles (Kolb, 1984), social constructivism (Vygotsky, 1978), and pedagogy of place (Gruenewald, 2003 can enhance relevance, motivation, spatial literacy, and critical thinking in students.
