Relevansi Pemikiran Agustinus tentang Totus Christus terhadap Masalah Gereja Kontemporer

This article discusses the relevance of Saint Augustine’s concept of Totus Christus in addressing various issues emerging within the contemporary Church. The concept of Totus Christus affirms that Christ is the head and the Church is His body, thus believers are understood as integral parts of the unity of Christ’s body. In the development of the modern Church, several challenges have arisen that affect the life of the Christian community, including the rise of individualism and the influence of business logic in church ministry, a sacramental crisis that reduces sacraments to mere rituals without deep spiritual meaning, and fragmentation that leads to divisions among Christians. This study employs a literature review method by analyzing various theological sources related to Augustine’s thought and the dynamics of the contemporary Church. The findings show that the concept of Totus Christus provides a strong theological foundation to reaffirm the importance of unity, love (caritas), and communal life within the Church. Through this understanding, the Church is expected to address the challenges of individualism, deepen sacramental understanding, and rebuild unity amid diversity. Thus, Augustine’s thought remains significantly relevant in helping the contemporary Church understand its identity and mission as the Body of Christ in the world.
