Periodontal disease is a prevalent oral health problem among coastal communities, particularly fishermen, due to limited access to healthcare facilities and a high prevalence of smoking habits. This study aimed to increase the knowledge and awareness of the fishing community regarding the prevention of periodontal disease through health promotion and early detection screening. This community-empowerment program involved 28 male fishermen in Lowa Village, Bontosikuyu Subdistrict, Selayar Islands. The intervention included periodontal tissue screening and oral health education. Program effectiveness was evaluated by comparing participants' knowledge levels before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the educational intervention. The results revealed that prior to the intervention, all respondents (100.0%) were in the poor knowledge category. Following the educational session, the knowledge level of all respondents (100.0%) significantly improved to the good category. Structured health promotion combined with early detection screening effectively enhances oral health literacy in coastal areas. Continuous health promotion and preventive programs involving local stakeholders are strongly recommended to maintain the periodontal health status of fishing communities.
