Edukasi dan Skrining Kesehatan Gigi dan Mulut sebagai Upaya Deteksi Dini Penyakit Karies pada Anak di UPT SDI Benteng 58 Kepulauan Selayar

Abstract

The community service activities conducted in the Selayar Islands aimed to improve students’ knowledge of oral health and to facilitate the early detection of dental caries through educational activities and screenings among students at the Benteng 58 Elementary School (UPT SDI) in the Selayar Islands. The program consisted of educational sessions, a pre-test, screening and oral health examinations, demonstrations and practice sessions on proper toothbrushing techniques, as well as evaluation via a post-test and reinforcement of the School Dental Health Program (UKGS). The educational sessions were conducted interactively and covered topics such as the importance of maintaining oral health, the causes of dental caries, caries prevention, and proper toothbrushing techniques. The results of the activity showed that students were able to participate in the educational sessions and practice toothbrushing techniques under the guidance of the community service team. Screening results indicated that 57.9% of students had dental caries and 42.1% did not, indicating that dental caries remains a significant oral health issue among students. Evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests was used to assess changes in knowledge following the educational sessions. This activity demonstrated that a combination of education, screening, and toothbrushing practice can serve as both a promotive and preventive measure while supporting the early detection of dental caries in school-aged children. Strengthening the School-Based Oral Health Program (UKGS) and conducting regular dental health checkups are necessary to support the sustainability of oral health programs in school settings.
