Abstract

Plastic waste management is a persistent challenge in small-island tourism destinations, where residual plastics have limited recycling value and transport options. This community service program implemented PITARA (Pirolisis Tabung Bertingkat) Version 2 at TPS3R Pulau Derawan through a Living Laboratory approach on 20-24 July 2026. Activities comprised stakeholder coordination, site and feedstock preparation, technology deployment, Training of Trainers (ToT), assisted operation, and initial evaluation. Ten TPS3R operators received training and technical assistance, while residents participated in feedstock collection and technology operation. Two BRIN laboratory reports generated before the Derawan deployment were used only as supporting Baseline characterization. For three plastic-derived samples, cetane index ranged from 43.66-72.17, density 773.9-793.8 kg/m3, viscosity 1.048-2.157 mm2/s, sulfur 22.6-57.7 ppm, flash point 20.05-37.5 degC, water 121.08-144.81 ppm, and acid number 0.20-0.89 mg KOH/g. The program demonstrates a socio-technical pathway for transferring plastic-waste conversion technology to an island community. Wider replication requires traceable batch logs, competency assessment, safety controls, product upgrading, and field-based performance validation.
