Abstract

This study aims to explore the contribution of the experiential approach to building interfaith understanding through a field study at a Buddhist temple in Central Tapanuli. Experientialism, which emphasizes direct and reflective learning through real-life engagement, is considered capable of providing a deeper and more meaningful understanding of religious diversity, particularly in the context of interactions between religious studies students and the local Buddhist community. The research employed a qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including participant observation, in-depth interviews with the temple’s administrators and congregation members, and written student reflections after the activity. The findings indicate that students’ direct involvement in observing and participating in rituals, discussions, and social activities at the temple significantly increased their appreciation of Buddhist values such as compassion, inner peace, tolerance, and social harmony. In addition, the experiential learning process encouraged critical reflection on their own beliefs and perspectives. Furthermore, this experience reduced prejudice, strengthened empathy, and developed constructive interfaith communication skills. It also fostered mutual respect and openness, which are essential components in promoting peaceful coexistence within pluralistic societies.
